USDA Prospective Plantings Report

March 29, 2024

USDA Analysts Forecast Increased Soybean Acres for 2024/25, Stocks Also Up

The U.S. Department of Agriculture released its March Prospective Plantings report yesterday, forecasting U.S. soybean acres at 86.5 million acres, up 3% from last year. StoneX's Arlan Suderman, Chief Commodities Economist, and USSEC's Jim Sutter, Chief Executive Officer, shared insights and perspective that shaped this report and what it might mean for the global soy complex moving forward. Here are a few of the highlights:

  • Weather remains the big unknown. Suderman shared results from 8 different predictive models and walks attendees through the different scenarios for when we will transition from El Niño to La Niña and what each might mean for the soy crop coming out of the Americas.
  • With current stocks and a 3% increase in soybean acres, there might be windows of opportunity for international buyers coming off this report. Know your opportunity triggers and and be prepared to take leverage the advantages of U.S. Soy.
  • The U.S. Federal Reserve's recent announcement to cut interest rates in June may help accelerate economic activity globally, and this benefits all of international trade.
